Karla's Kids was founded 29 years ago by Carla Hooker, a native of Washington, DC.  Carla began teaching children the artistry of dance to expose them to the arts,  instill discipline, and improve academic achievement. In 1991, she was awarded a full dance scholarship by the legendary founder of the Dance Theater of Harlem,  Arthur Mitchell. While under Mr. Mitchell's tutelage she studied with the company's principal dancers, while her students graced the stages with the company and gospel artists Richard Smallwood,  Grammy Award winner Stephanie Mills and host of other world renown artists.Carla has trained hundreds of dancers with the John F. Kennedy Center Dance Residency,  Dance Institute of Washington,  DC Parks and Recreation,  Maryland Park and Planning Commission, and High Point, NC Parks and Recreation.

She has passed this gift of dance and choreography along to her daughter, law enforcement officer,  Kamaria Hooker, Karla's Kids assistant director and lead choreographer.
